Bio:

Alex Cooke is a Doctor of Musical Arts student at the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying with Keith Fitch, where he is also the Composition Department Assistant and an instructor of Theory.  He is concurrently a PhD student in Applied Mathematics at Case Western Reserve University. His music is characterized by a strong attention to texture and melody; it often draws inspiration from natural phenomena, seeking to invoke complex sensory experiences in a musical setting. In addition to his classically oriented composition, Mr. Cooke is also an avid songwriter, electronic musician and sought-after modern dance accompanist.

Mr. Cooke has received numerous awards for his work, including the Lily Dreyfuss Memorial Award for musical achievement in dance and the Flora Stone Award for achievements in the humanities and was recently named a finalist in the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Competition for his piece Lac de Feu. For the past two years, he has served as the Resident Composer and Music Director for R.E.D. Dance Company in Akron, OH and has recently served as a mentor for Music On the Verge, a program for young composers. He has also taught at the college level, serving as an instructor for Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH.

Mr. Cooke’s work have been featured by Case Western Reserve University, R.E.D. Dance Company, the CooperMorgan Dance Company, the City of Akron Summer Arts Experience and many other venues. Recent commissions include R.E.D. Dance Company, CooperMorgan Dance Company and the Moanin’ Frogs Saxophone Sextet.

Mr. Cooke graduated Case Western Reserve University magna cum laude in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Theater Arts with a concentration in Dance. In the summer of 2013, he studied at the Fresh Inc Festival in Kenosha, Wisconsin with Stacy Garrop and Dan Visconti, where his piece, Apricity, received its premiere by Fifth House Ensemble at the Music Institute of Chicago. He also studied at the highSCORE Festival in Pavia, Italy with Dmitri Tymoczko, Chirstopher Theofanidis, and Mario Garuti and attended the University of South Florida's New Music Consortium in 2014, where he gave a lecture and received a performance of his piece, Petrichor. In 2014, he will return to the Fresh Inc Festival as a "2.0" student, acting as a mentor for first-year attendees.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Mr. Cooke is an avid photographer and equestrian. He is also a trained weather spotter for the National Weather Service, an Amateur Extra class radio operator and is the former administrator of St. Jude Children’s Hospital’s Facebook Fundraising page. His also an editor for the popular online photography magazine Fstoppers.
